Mermaid: Is It Fact Or Fiction?

Stories have been told for centuries and have been depicted across the world. This mythical sea creature often described as half-human and the other half with a fishtail. Many writers and artists have plagued efforts to bring life to this enormous beauty. Some even claim today, that they are present. An incident in Hawaii dazzles the tourists with an image of half-human and half-fish. When a group of people went on a dive near the "Kaiwi Point Mermaid", the diver master "Jeff Leicher" encountered a nude woman with long flowing hair and beautiful faces. He immediately captured the photo but it broke the surface and swam away. The photos have been investigated by the experts and say that they are genuine and have not been tampered with. In ancient history, mermaids depict both good fortune and disaster.

Many legends have been revolved around this beauty. In Africa, tales exist about mythical water spirits called Mami Wata - Mother Of Water. A water spirit often accompanied by a large serpent wrapping itself around her with its head lying between her breasts. Several tales revolve around her, some say that her sex is linked with fidelity. That for male followers she would appear as a young and beautiful woman and for women followers, she would appear as a man. She is a popular subject to fiction, art, poetry, and music of the Caribbean and western Africa.

The myth of Atargatis - According to the legend, Atargatis fell in love with a Shepard Hadad. And, they both had a daughter called Semiramis, who later became the queen of Assyria. Atargatis accidentally caused the death of Hadad. She couldn't live with that and drown herself in the lake near Ascalon. The water couldn't let die her beauty and transformed her beauty into a mermaid. Who was later worshipped as a goddess. A temple reflecting this mermaid has also been built in Israel which was made of pure gold and diamonds. A pond is dedicated to the worshippers of Atargatis, where water is filled with fishes and water. These stories have been traveled to Rome and Greece and called Derceto and Dea Syriae.

Southeast Asia - Suvannamaccha(golden fish) - In the epic Ramayana, Hanuman attempts to build the bridge of stones. His plans have been hampered by Suvannamaccha who has been instructed to prevent the completion. When they two meet, they fell in love and Suvannamaccha helps in completing the path.

Mermaids have been featured in various literature and art. One of the famous stories is Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid which was depicted in 1835. But a lot of changes have been made in the film made out by Disney. In the story, when the mermaid gets the legs, when she walks, a severe pain would trigger in her foot which is equal to walking on pointed sticks.

We don't know what mysteries lie in the deep.
